My name is Jimmy Ashburn and I am an Independent who usually votes Republican. I worked for the State of Tennessee for 20 years and finally retired in disgust after being passed over for promotions repeatedly over the years. I am probably the first employee of the State of Tenn. who has retired in a position lower than where I started my first day.I am a Viet Nam Era Veteran who served in the Air Force during the Viet Nam War. Although the State of Tennessee has a law to honor veterans: Manual 48 of the Rules of the Tennessee Department of Personnel …TCA 1120 –2-. 07 (2) states: Passing Over A Veteran. An appointing authority who passes over an eligible veteran and selects a non-veteran with the same or lower rating must file with the Commissioner the reasons for such an action. Documentation of this action will become a part of the certification record. The greivance I filed was ignored and I was unjustly accused and reprimanded in retalliation. When I hired a lawyer to represent me he was bought off. I have contacted numerous news agencies but no one has responded so I know that the media doesn't care about veterans rights or equal employment opportunity.
The Tennessee State government has become a welfare agency for the politically connected white collar criminal. Most of the state employees that I have worked with have been involved in some kind of illegal/ dishonest cover-up or other activity. These are the men who get promoted because of their political connections and sit around doing nothing but collecting a check. I would like to support a candidate who will work to change this "good ole boy" system of laziness and dishonesty. When I found this site I was searching for information regarding who is opposing Phil Bredsen in the next gubenatorial election so I could help campaign against governor Bredesen.
When Phil Bredesen made his little trip to Mississppi to welcome home the 278th it wasn't because he cares about veterans; it was a vote gathering expedition. I believe this because he did nothing to resolve my situation. The State of Tennessee is not an Equal Opportunity Employer and I can prove this. I have seen the lazy, the dishonest and the immoral rewarded while the honest employees suffer.
If you want more information about this matter e-mail me at jea435@hotmail.com.
Sincerely,
Jimmy E. Ashburn

Hi Adam,
What caught my eye was the non-partisan label of your blog. I work on a broad spectrum of issues with with Amnesty International (I've been volunteer leadership w/AI for some time).
Amnesty International is itself non-partisan... "AI is independent of any government, political ideology, economic interest or religion. It does not support or oppose any government or political system, nor does it support or oppose the views of the victims whose rights it seeks to protect. It is concerned solely with the impartial protection of human rights. - from http://web.amnesty.org/pages/aboutai-index-eng
I recently started a blog for Amnesty International's human rights work here in Middle Tennessee.
I would greatly appreciate it if you could add it to your blog listing.
Thank you for the consideration.
peace w/justice,

I actually taught Adam in a political science class at the University of Tennessee. This site makes me proud of that fact, and has become regular reading for me. I appreciate the lack of partisanship and the concise links. Great job--keep it up.
