The problem is Willie-ham is not a Republican, but just a white Democrat who knows a Democrat could not get elected in the heavy Repub. County District 1.
He voted for a $.25 tax increase less than a year after promissing not to raise taxes in his campaign.

Cotton Trial Concludes Today -- The trial of Hamilton Co. Commissioner William Cotton concludes today for his part in Operation Tennessee Waltz. Jury deliberations begin at 9:00 today and will conclude when the jury reaches a verdit. Cotton is accused of taking bribes through bagman Charles Love. If convincted, Cotton could face up to 20 years in prision. You can read some of the transcripts from the recorded coversations involving Love and Cotton and mentioning a lot of other lawmakers at the Chattanoogan.
Ford Asks State to Pay for Attorney Fees -- Ophelia Ford has asked the state to pay for her attorney fees in her case to stop the State Senate from invalidating her election. Ford's attorney says it is customary for the prevailing party's fees to be paid for by the opposition. The state, however, has said it didn't lose - and besides, the case is under appeal, so the request is premature.
Venable: Mayor or Congress? -- Sullivan County Mayor Richard Venable has filed to run again for reelection, meeting the local election filing deadline yesterday, but Venable is also considering running for Bill Jenkin's 1st Congressional District seat. Technically, Venable can run in both races, although Republican State Rep. Steve Godsey has also filed papers to run for Sullivan Co. Mayor, assuming Venable would run for Congress. Two Democrats, Larry Hall, Joseph E. Miller, and Jerry Dykes, an independent, have also filed.
Wharton Will Be Challenged -- Maverick Shelby County Commissioner John Willingham just met the filing deadline yesterday to challenge Shelby Co. Mayor A.C. Wharton. Wharton shocked many political observers when he turned in his qualifying petition with at least the tacit support of all the city mayors in Shelby County. The Republican Willingham, says he will focus on pushing a 'fairness tax,' a payroll tax deemed unconstitutional earlier in the week. Willingham said that ruling was based on politics and the ruling was the final straw that convinced him to run.
It's a sad day when a republican is running on a platform of establishing a payroll/income tax.
Just more evidence that republicans have become democrats-lite.
