Early Voting Ends -- The period for early voting ends today, with Election Day being Tuesday for several counties across the state with partisan primaries. According to the Tennessean, the turnout was low in Davidson Co. Turnout was also low in Knox Co., where voters seem confused by the large number of write-in candidates. Venable Campaigning on Gas Prices -- Sullivan Co. Mayor Richard Venable campaigning for Congressman Bill Jenkins seat is touring the 1st Congressional District in a bus with a message that we need to drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to get gas prices down. Jim Gaines, former Bristol City Councilman and retiring King College political science professor says the race will come down to geography: "Geography is going to play as much into this one as philosophy...There is a philosophical divide, and a lot of Republicans are going to be looking for the most conservative candidate. Others are going to be looking for the one who will represent their point of view the best in Washington. That will divide about evenly among the top candidates, but when it comes down to it, geography will be the key issue."

Survey USA on the Senate Race -- A new poll has been conducted on candidates favorables and unfavorables in the U.S. Senate race. The poll by Survey USA was conducted by WBIR, the Knoxville-based NBC affliate. You can see the results here or view the very interesting cross-tabs here.

Naifeh's Coon Supper Has No. 7 -- Jimmy Naifeh's annual 'Coon Supper' that usually attracts prominent state policy makers and plenty of folks running for office will have plenty of Jack Daniels No. 7 to go around. The state's most famous distillary is underwriting the liquor for the event, after the company sent an email to all state officers inviting them to the event. A company can provide "entertainment, food, refreshments, meals, beverages" worth up to $50 per legislator, as long as every legislator is invited. Rep. Chris Clem criticized the event and said he would not attend, but Naifeh defended it saying: "They've always wanted to have their product there. It's a Tennessee product."

Compromise Close on Eminent Domain? -- The Senate version of a bill dealing with eminent domain sponsored by Democratic Sen. Doug Jackson unanimously passed the Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday. The bill in the House has been stalled because Republicans have proposed 21 amendments to strengthen the bill. Sen. Joe Fowlkes: "I plan to try to meet with some of the Republican leaders on the House side and see if we can get some of their members to withdraw some of those amendments. Some of them probably won't want to, but we're going to talk with them." House Majority Leader Kim McMillan also said a compromise was close.

Ford Gets Ankle Bracelet Removed -- Former State Sen. John Ford, indicted on federal corruption charges in Operation Tennessee Waltz has been given some degree of freedom. A judge granted Ford's request to remove his ankle bracelet that has been ensuring he has complied with a court order after federal prosecutors said Ford was cooperative. Ford's trial in the Waltz case is set for October 2.
