Someone had better have a long heart to heart talk with Ward Crutchfield. He's the only one out of this bunch that I have an ounce of sympathy for. It would be ashame if he got convicted at trial and got sent to prison. If he cops a plea, then given his age and health problems I bet the Judge would give him probation and cut him loose. But he won't be cut loose if he goes through with a trial and is found guilty. Oh and I thought Hooks Sr comments stood in stark contrast to those of Roscoe Dixon. Mr Dixon deserves a nice long stay in whatever prison they put him in!

Venable Wants Recount -- Richard Venable, who came in second place in the final counts in the 1st Congressional District's GOP primary says he wants a recount. Richard Venable confirmed Monday that he has asked the Tennessee Republican Party Primary Board to consider a recount in the GOP primary race. Venable lost to State Rep. David Davis by about 575 votes. The TRP is preparing a legal review of the request.
Corker's Environmental Case Proceeds -- The Nashville City Paper reports that a lawsuit concerning Bob Corker and the City of Chattanooga will move forward. The attorney on record for the petitioners says the case is not driven by politics, even though he has a long history of contributing to Democratic candidates and his wife has given to Corker's opponent Harold Ford, Jr. Michael Powell, senior advisor to the Ford campaign, said Corker used his mayoral office for “significant private gain.” Ford, who was on Hardball yesterday to announce a new poll that shows him topping Corker, when asked why he was at an out-of-state fundraiser, responded that it was because his opponent was worth a quarter of a billion dollars - a figure the Corker camp says Ford knows is wrong. Meanwhile, a judge in the environmental case has ruled some of the records in the trial will be sealed. Corker will be campaigning in Jackson, TN with Ed Bryant and Marsha Blackburn today. Second Slate Set -- A second slate of potential nominees for the last position on the Tennessee Supreme Court has been set. The list includes five jurists from Memphis, including several black candidates - which was what Gov. Bredesen said he wanted in rejecting the first batch of nominees. The judicial selection committee will select three nominees to present to Gov. Bredesen. More from the City Paper. [Thanks to JW for the correction]
Bowers May Plead Guilty -- State Sen. Kathryn Bowers may plead guilty to her role in Operation Tennessee Waltz. Federal prosecutor Tim DiScenza told U.S. Dist. Court Judge J. Daniel Breen that there is no longer a need for a trial date, which likely means Bowers has already talked with the government about a deal. Bowers had been scheduled to be tried on Oct. 3. In elections earlier this month, Bowers easily won the Democratic nomination for her District 33 Senate seat. Meanwhile, Operation Tennessee Waltz, which began in 2003, is "ongoing and active," according to US attorney David Kustoff.
Chumney to Challenge Herenton Next Year -- Although the race for Memphis Mayor is a year away, Memphis City Council member Carol Chumney says she is running. Mayor Willie Herenton recently hinted that he will seek a record-breaking fifth term. Chumney was elected seven times to the state legislature from 1990 to 2003 when she resigned to run for the council seat. She also ran for county mayor in 2002, but lost in the Democratic primary to Mayor A C Wharton.
