Bredesen Asks for Illegal Immigration Money -- Gov. Bredesen and eight other governors Tuesday asked President Bush to provide states with $950 million in federal funds to offset the costs of detaining illegal immigrants. Dorinda Carter, spokeswoman for the state Department of Correction, said there are 152 illegal immigrants in Tennessee prisons, and the state spends about $3.1 million annually housing them. California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, and Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack were some of the other big names on the list.

Memphis Passes Living Wage -- Any service business that contracts with the city of Memphis will now have to pay a 'living wage,' after a vote of the City Council. The bill requires city service contractors to pay their employees at least $10 an hour with benefits or $12 without. Certain exemptions were placed in the bill to deal with services funded jointly by the city and county.

Bredesen to Host Open Budgeting Hearings -- Governor Bredesen has opened up budget hearings to the public - you can view a topical schedule of hearings at the Chattanoogan - or watch the hearings online on the Governor's website.

Hendersonville Alderman Challenges Election -- A longtime Hendersonville alderman, Mark Skidmore, who lost his seat by 18 votes has challenged the result in a lawsuit, saying illegally cast votes made the outcome "incurably uncertain and void." The lawsuit says mistakes were made by poll workers, which allowed people to cast votes in ward races where they were not registered. Skidmore filed the suit Friday in Sumner County Chancery Court after the Sumner County Election Commission certified the results Thursday.

Congratulations to Brad Smith -- Congratulations go out to Brad Smith, Rhodes scholar, Harvard graduate, Corker campaign worker, and Chattanooga native - who will be going to Oxford, England to study under the Rhodes Scholar program. I met Brad along the campaign trail as he assisted Bob Corker in his US Senate win and can say he's one of the most diligent and kind guys I've ever met. Congratulations to him.
