Cooper: Iraq is in Civil War -- Many officials in the Bush administration have refused to refer to the situation in Iraq as a civil war, but Congressman Jim Cooper says the term is probably warranted. Rep. Cooper said there is a growing bipartisan consensus in Congress that lawmakers should take another vote on whether they supported going into Iraq. Congressman Zach Wamp, meanwhile endorsed John McCain's plan to temporarly increase the number of troops in Iraq to head of sectarian violence. Wamp: "A greater show of force in the short run will get us out of there sooner."
Gaylord Sticking Point on Increasing Nashville's Hotel Tax -- The Nashville City Paper discusses a proposal to fund the new Nashville convention center with revenue collected from an increase in the motel tax. Members of the Davidson County delegation to the General Assembly legislature seemed generally amenable to the proposal, but Rep. Mike Turner, whos district includes the Opryland Hotel, said the proposal smacks of robbing Peter to pay Paul. Turner said that several area businesses, other than Gaylord but which rely on the Opryland convention center for their success, have expressed concern to him about the proposal.
Shame Law Could Be Repealed -- Gov. Phil Bredesen’s DUI task force recently recommended the repeal of the so-called shame law which requires DUI offenders to wear shirts that say "I am a drunk driver" when they are serving their sentence by picking up trash alongside the road. New legislation may call for closing the passenger loophole in the state's open container laws, where passengers of cars are allowed to have open containers.
