Cooper Files to Dismiss Mail Fraud Case -- State Sen. Jerry Cooper is pushing to dismiss the federal mail fraud and conspiracy case against him on the grounds that prosecutors coached witnesses to change their testimony before appearing before a grand jury. Court records state that the charges were brought against Sen. Cooper after he obtained an appraisal from McMinnville, Tenn., real estate appraiser James Passons that inflated the value of a lumber mill he was trying to sell by falsely claiming the property contained a railroad spur.
Knox Co. Will Appoint Successors -- Knox Co. Law Director John Owings says a special election to fill the seats of the term-limited county officers thrown out by last week's ruling by the State Supreme Court is not legal. According to Owings, the State Supreme Court says the replacements must come through appointments of the existing commission. Under the plan still yet to be announced, the Commission would replace the 12 county officers who have served more than two terms.
Sasser Outlines Dem Agenda -- The Nashville City Paper points out that Gray Sasser takes the rein of the Democratic Party when the GOP is the one eeking out the wins in Tennessee - first the election of Bob Corker and then the ouster of longtime Lt. Governor John Wilder. The coming challenge for Sasser will be holding on to Democratic seats in the state legislature and fielding a contender in the 2008 race for US Senate. GOP Chair Bob Davis says the Democrats have no one that can beat incumbent Lamar Alexander.
Ford Donning Black and Gold -- Harold Ford, Jr. will be teaching a seminar on American political leadership next semester at Vanderbilt University. That would be in addition to Ford's role as the incoming leader of the Democratic Leadership Council and a special advisor to Governor Bredesen.
