Breaking: Baker Making Calls for Thompson
The rumors that former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson will jump into the Presidential Election in 2008 were probably persistant enough to warrant a mention in this week's Tennessee political news. However, now the rumors are going to the next level. The Hill's blog is reporting that former Tennessee Senator Howard Baker is making calls to GOP leaders for Thompson: "I am making a few calls and I think it’s a great idea." TN GOP Chair Bob Davis also chimes in: "I think Fred Thompson is by far the one American who could bring this country together...There are some good folks running right now, but naturally if a conservative Tennessean like Fred Thompson chose to run, I believe there would be a flood of support from across the country.”
Update : Michael Silence reports that Baker confirmed for the Knoxville News-Sentinel that he is not only making calls for Thompson, Thompson isn't discouraging him from doing so. Baker: "He doesn't confirm that he's interested and he also doesn't tell me to stop."
Baker and Thompson are CFR members.
Ron Paul just announced his candidacy!
