Adam when I heard about Williams switch yesterday. It reminded me of that criminal case in North Carolina. The Democrat State House Speaker Jim Black met a GOP State Rep Michael Decker at an IHOP restaurant in January 2003 and they both went into the mens bathroom where Black handed Decker thousands of dollars in bribe money to get him to switch to the Democrat Party. Black admitted all that in court last month when he plead guilty. To beat all though that Michael Decker actually switched back to the GOP a few months later. Thats why I dont like party switching.....theres just something unseemly about it and makes you wonder about the TRUE motives of the individual who switched.

GOP Defection Changes Balance in State Senate

GOP Defection Changes Balance in State Senate -- State Sen. Mike Williams, a longtime political maverick, changed his party affiliation yesterday from the GOP to "Independent." Williams says he will not caucus with the Democrats. Williams criticized Senate Republicans move to flex new-found power in the State Senate. Williams: "My first priority is to the people of Tennessee, not the Republican Party. Some in the party are leading us down a path of bitterness and divisiveness and, in doing so, they have left me. I have not left them." The move leaves the state Senate with 16 Republicans, 16 Democrats and one Independent, but the move makes little practical difference in the Senate, where Republican Ron Ramsey has already been elected to a two year term as Lt. Governor. More here, here, here, and here.

J. C. Watts Comments on Thompson -- Speaking to a group of students in Chattanooga, former Congressman J.C. Watts weighs in on the potential Fred Thompson candidacy: "Fred can make it extremely, extremely interesting ... He was not one that seemed to be smitten with the political arena. I think it's admirable that he said, 'I'm going to go get a real job.' … He didn't seem to be hungry to climb the ladder, the political ladder. And I think that's a virtue." Speaking of Thompson, he is current leading a poll being conducted by Fox News host Sean Hannity. For more Fred, check out today's Tennessean with comments from Teddy Bart and Steve Gill.

Horne Urges in Al -- Major Democratic fundraiser Doug Horne has been urging former Vice President Al Gore to jump in the Presidential hunt, according to the MetroPulse. Horne is the owner of several Knoxville-based radio stations. Horne trashed the Republican candidates and said the former vice president is the best possible experienced Democratic candidate to defeat them.

Ketron Files For Abolition of Program He Created -- State Democrats sent out a press release noting that Murfreesboro Sen. Bill Ketron has now filed a bill that would abolish the state's Driving Certificate Program, which has been accused of giving illegal immigrants a backdoor into obtaining official-looking identification - a program Ketron filed to create. Ketron defends the change saying: "Today we simply corrected a mistake that we made three years ago."
