Is Judge Mike Whitaker the same guy that got beat by John Jay Hooker in '98?

There's an interesting situation happening in Alabama. Yesterday the brother of the Alabama Democrat State Party Chairman Joe Turnham plead guilty to obstruction of justice charges. The US Attorney was quoted as saying the guilty plea yesterday will lead to the indictments of people higher up on the food chain in an evergrowing scandal involving the junior college system in Alabama. A lot of people believe that Alabama is on the verge of having its own version of the Tennessee Waltz. Last Friday, prosecutors filed papers asking a Judge to sentence former Alabama Governor Don Siegleman(D)to 30 years in prison late next month at his sentenceing hereing. Two months ago former Alabama Secretary of State Nancy Worley(D) was indicted on corruption charges. Worley was one of only a very few Democrats to lose last year. Something big is about to happen...you can almost feel it.

Thompson Begins Raising Money
Thompson Begins Raising Money -- On Monday, Fred Thompson held a conference call with around 100 core-supporters the campaign dubbed "First Day Founders" and encouraged them to go forth and raise money for the the former TN Sen's run for President. Fred has formed a 'testing-the-waters committee' which is not quite a campaign committee, though it will officially begin accepting contributions on June 4. TPB previously reported Thompson would announce a formal committee in early July. According to the The Daily Standard, a proposed date is July 4, with the announcement happening in Thompson's hometown in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee.
Awkward -- Speaking of Thompson, it's rumored the candidate-to-be might show at the Tennessee Republican Party's annual Statesman's Dinner, set for this Saturday at the Opryland Hotel. That could make things even more awkward for the featured speaker at the event - former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney. Of course it was already going to be awkward for Romney following news from late last week that the only TN Congressman left on Romney's team (Blackburn) was switching to Thompson. Still, Mitt Romney's campaign has raised more money from Tennessee than all other candidates, Republican and Democrat, combined. But even that could change to benefit Thompson. [Ed Note - This rumor is not true. Thompson will headline a Virginia GOP event at the behest of former RNC Chair Ed Gillespie.]
Bredesen Adds His Own Pork -- Not to be outdone by his Democratic colleagues in the State House, Governor Bredesen has rejected their budget filled with $100,000 per legislator community grants and amended his own $27.47 billion budget with another $500 million in spending. Among the beneficiaries are UT-Chattanooga, which gets funding for a new library ($48M), the UT Music Center ($30M), and Tennessee's four major zoos ($3M). The Governor's new plan does not include any money for sales tax relief on groceries and relies on his pushed 40c cigarette tax increase, but does include provisions for tax credits for corporations that invest in TN. More here and here
Local Items -- In Knox County, Commissioners delayed a vote on the County's 4-inch thick operating budget. Commissioners, however, did agree Tuesday to approve bond issues totaling $87 million to pay for a revised pension system for uniformed county officers and for school capital projects. A judge in Fayette County is causing controversy after he asked police not to prosecute all DUI offenders. Fayette General Sessions Court Judge Mike Whitaker sent a letter last week May 22 to addressed to "All City Police Stations." The letter states: "Hereinafter no more than two warrants or cases of misdemeanor charges will be issued per arrest or citation without permission of the court."
Thompson will be in VA on Saturday speaking there.
