Clement's Ad Buy
Clement's Ad Buy -- There are four weeks left in the race for Mayor of Nashville and Bob Clement by all accounts still leads. Clement hopes to shore up his victory this week with a $65,000 ad buy, which will blanket all the Nashville TV stations. Clement advisers say he plans to spend upwards of $400,000 on network TV ads between now and the election and an additional $200,000 on direct mail, print and cable TV advertising.
Breaking Ranks with the White House -- The Chattanooga Times Free Press has an article this morning examining how TN Republican Congressmen have been parting ways with the White House, especially more recently. Vandy professor Dr. John Greer explains: "President Bush is just really unpopular right now, and that gives them some additional cover ... [They] not only want to stay in office, but they want to represent what their people back home are saying. That means, from time to time, you have to break with the presidency." Last week, Sen. Bob Corker criticized the direction of immigration reform by taking subtle swipes at the White House.
Al Gore's Son Arrested -- Al Gore III, son of the potential Presidential candidate, was arrested over the holiday break for drug possession charges after he was pulled over for speeding. Gore was found in possession of marijuana, Vicodin, amphetamines and Xanax and Valium. He didn't have a prescription for any of those drugs.
Session Mundane? -- The Tennessean has a retrospective on this past legislative session and concludes that most of the 6,000 bills the legislature dealt with this past year were local and mundane issues. That's not surprising for a state that has legal requirements to get virtually all local regulations okayed by the state government in Nashville. According to analysis, about 12% of successful bills addressed crime, while 30% dealt with how the government governs. More here
