Davis Will Sail to Reelection

Davis Will Sail to Reelection -- A new Public Opinion Strategies poll obtained by TN Politics Blog shows that Congressman David Davis will likely sail to reelection in 2008. The telephone survey conducted Dec 11-13 (MOE ± 5.66%) shows Davis with a 55% job approval rating among the likely voters and 74% among the 45% of voters who have been contacted by Davis' office. A ballot test against potential Democrat Rick Trent shows Davis winning the ballot-test 58% to 26% with 15% undecided.

Income Tax Opponents Mourn Loss of Cannon -- Opponents of the income tax are morning the loss of Devereaux Cannon Jr, one of the most vocal income tax opponents. Devereaux, an expert on TN flags, was one of the chief organizers of the Tax Free TN website, largely considered one of the first grassroots political websites in TN history. Bill Hobbs, Ben Cunningham and A.C. Kleinheider have more.

Registration Deadline for Pres Primary is Mon -- If you want to vote in either the Democrat or Republican Presidential primary in TN you need to be registered to vote by Monday, Jan 7. TN's primary is a part of the Feb. 5 Mega Tuesday. The early voting period for the primary is Jan. 16-31. The first race in the 2008 Presidential battle is today - the Iowa Caucus and this is one of the first years that TN could vote for someone other than the predetermined nominees, according to the City Paper.

Bredesen Named to Dem Gov Association Post -- West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin has appointed Gov. Phil Bredesen's as policy chairman of the Democratic Governors Association's executive committee, citing Bredesen's background in healthcare. Bredesen: "I don't have a lot of tolerance for some of the extreme positions my party gets itself into, and I think the Democratic Party needs people in policy positions who've got sensible, reasonably business-friendly solutions to things."

Turner Appointed on Metro Schools Issue -- State Rep. Mike Turner, a vocal advocate for returning Metro Nashville's schools to community school districts has been appointed to a committee responsible for rezoning. The task force, which will hold its first meeting today, is slated to include 11 members and one chair. The members are to include one individual appointed by each school board member, plus one representative each for Director of Schools Pedro Garcia and Mayor Karl Dean. Chairing the task force will be a school board member appointed by Board of Education Chair Marsha Warden. Turner's view is controversal because of fears of "resegregation" of Metro's schools.
