Bredesen, Bush to Tour Tornado Areas

Bredesen, Bush to Tour Tornado Areas -- Gov. Phil Bredesen toured areas in TN affected by this week's tornados yesterday. Bredesen says he will ask for federal assistance in the cleanup of the tornado damage which resulted in an estimated 28 fatalities, 150 injuries and widespread damage in seven counties across Tennessee. Delegate Counts In -- GOP officials say Mike Huckabee will get 25 Tennessee delegates to the Republican National Convention, John McCain 19 and Mitt Romney 8, according to state party officials. The calculations for the Democrats are still not in, but CNN has projected Hillary Clinton will get 34 Tennessee delegates while Barack Obama gets 21. Tennessee Republicans also send three uncommitted delegates - state Chairman Robin Smith and two Republican National Committee members - to the party's convention. Democrats have 17 uncommitted Tennessee delegates, also known as "superdelegates." More here, including Huckabee's VP chances according to TN political scientists.

Alexander and Corker Vote Against Economic Stimulus -- Sen. Lamar Alexander says he will be voting against the economic stimulus bill that he was originally charged with sheparding through the Senate after the House modified it. Alexander: "The Senate was right to reject an economic growth bill that would have opened the door to unnecessary spending. Now we should quickly make changes to the House legislation in those areas that have broad support in Congress." Bob Corker also voted against the package, but he signalled his intent to vote against the original bill.

Hamilton Co. Sheriff Resigns -- Hamilton Co. Sheriff Billy Long resigned that post after being indicted by the feds on a variety of charges, including the charge that he cooperated in a drug deal. While the County Commission will appoint a temporary replacement, an election will be held in August for the remainder of the term. Chief Branum, former police chief in Soddy-Daisy, said he will submit his name for interim sheriff. Former Sheriff John Cupp has said he would serve as interim if asked by the commission, but he said he would not be a candidate in August. Rep. Vince Dean of East Ridge has said he may run for the post in August. More here.

Moore Steps Down as Knox Co. Commission Chair -- Scott Moore has stepped down as Knox Co. Commission Chair after receiving a dismal vote total in his race to be the county's next County Clerk. Moore: "Yesterday in the election we (saw) many changes in Knox County government ... To be fair with County Commission, I'm going to step down as Knox County Commission chairman." Moore oversaw the illegal appointments of several County Commissioners that recently landed the County in the NY Times.
