Presidential Visits
Presidential Visits -- Don't forget that tomorrow is the big day in politics - we're just one day away from TN's Super Tuesday vote ... and the candidates are making the rounds in TN:
- Mike Huckabee was in Chattanooga early this morning along with campaign surrogate Chuck Norris, where both got a surprisingly large crowd. The candidate was introduced by State Rep. Eric Watson and County Commission Chairman Bill Hullander was in the crowd. Yesterday, Huckabee took the pulpit at Bellevue Church in Memphis.
- John McCain was in Nashville on Saturday and now leads a TN poll conducted by Rasmussen (32 - 29 - 23; to Romney and Huckabee respectively). McCain also seemed confident about a potential Thompson endorsement - something that could be huge for swaying support in TN. McCain: "I'm sure that Fred will be very supportive at the right time." Still, skeptics remain like the powerful TN talk radio apparatus.
- Hillary Clinton sent her daughter Chelsea on Sunday, who is now the third Clinton to campaign in TN. The daughter of candidate Hillary and former President Bill Clinton met with about 200 supporters at Sunset Grill in Nashville. Rasmussen has Clinton leading Obama in TN 49-36%, although Obama is favored among UT students.
- Mitt Romney was in Nashville at 6:45 this morning at the Pancake Pantry. Romney was joined by Congressman Marsha Blackburn (who switched back to Romeny after coming from his camp back to Fred Thompson) and Rick Santorum.
- Ron Paul supporters continue to campaign hard for him especially in rural TN. The KNS has a media report.
Hamilton Co. Sheriff Arrested -- Hamilton Co. Sheriff Billy Long has been arrested by the FBI on federal extortion, money laundering and gun charges. A long list of County Commissioners and even the County Law Director are saying the Sheriff should step down from his post, but if he doesn't ousted proceedings will be initiated. On Saturday, Sheriff Long was charged with taking $17,400 in payments between April 2007 and December 2007 allegedly for protecting the video poker operations and other illegal activity of ethnic Indian convenience store owners. Long also has been charged with accepting cash payoffs in conjunction with what he believed to be money laundering connected with drug trafficking. More here.
