AT&T and Cable at Compromise?
AT&T and Cable at Compromise? -- The Nashville CIty Paper reports AT&T may be at a compromise with the cable industry over AT&T's bid for a statewide cable franchise. One of cable's biggest objections to a statewide franchise would be the lack of build-out, since local franchise owners are expected to service rural and other areas outside of metros as a part of servicing urban centers. A statewide franchise would allow AT&T to cater only to areas where there is a high demand for cable services - but under a compromise AT&T would still be required to service certain other low-income areas. Lawmakers are optimistic the new compromise will pass this year - and lawmakers are also praising the increased access to broadband internet inherent in AT&T's expansion of services.
Speculation Abounds in Memphis -- Talk in Memphis over the Easter weekend has been filled with who will replace Willie. Willie Herenton's surprise announcement that he would resign from his spot as Mayor of Memphis to seek the position of Memphis School Board Superintendent has created a political free-for-all. Among the mentioned candidates are Shelby Co. Mayor A.C. Wharton and Carol Chumney and Herman Morris, Herenton's challengers in the last bid. The Commercial Appeal lays out the speculation.
More Secrecy in Government -- State Sen. Roy Herron stopped a bill that would restrict state employees basic contact information like address and phone number from being accessible by public records request. The bill, would also close up that information for state and local lawmakers. Herron: "Every county commissioner, every county official, every city councilman, every mayor, every state official, every one of them will now have this information confidential ... The idea, I think, is not ideal."
