EPA Comes Down on TN

EPA Comes Down on TN -- With the release of new EPA standards this week, Tennessee cities may face challenges in becoming compliant on air quality standards. Anywhere between 300 and 400 American communities now meeting the standard are expected not to do so under the new rules, including Chattanooga. After instituting auto emissions controls and open burning bans in 2005, the Chattanooga region squeaked by to retain a “pending” tag of compliance for the three-year period ending in 2007. Meanwhile, Knox County, notorious for non-compliance is further behind. Nashville and Memphis will also have to increase its quality.

Wamp Forces Dem Split on Immigration -- Congressman Zach Wamp is among several House Republicans who have signed a discharge petition to bring the Secure America with Verification and Enforcement Act up for a vote. The petition would bypass the usual process of getting bills through congressional committees. The bill is sponsored by Democratic Congressman Heath Shuler, but is opposed by the more liberal members of the party, including the House leadership. The bill would add 8,000 border patrol agents and increase deportations.

Copyright Bill Stripped Down -- A stripped down version of a bill that would require state run universities to combat illegal music downloading is advancing after provisions were removed from the bill requiring universities to install complex computer software to monitor illegal downloads in favor of making universities "reasonably attempt" to combat illegal downloads. Universities initially fought Sen. Tim Burchett's bill because of the high costs of adding software that would monitor downloading.
