An English language only amendment tacked onto a sewage bill? Reads as being racist to me.

Tell us what is really on your little mind, Rep. Hill...the news articles read as though Hill has made a gigantic Freudian slip with regard to his personal views on illegal immigration.

And you would think that the Republican members of the Tennessee General Assembly would make better use of the assets ---tax revenues and legislative time --- belonging to the Tennessee taxpayers instead of trying to firing Tennessee workers for uttering Spanish words such as "Los Angeles" ("City of Angles") at the workplace...

Also, the Hill amendment was on a worker safety bill concerning sewage. So, this was meant as a workplace safety issue. Also, is this only news because Dems were mad?

From Rep. Campfield's website:

As I said in my last post rep. Matthew Hill brought an amendment allowing employers to mandate English be spoken in their workplace. The Democrats hated it and voted against it on an all but party line vote. (All republicans and Democratic Reps. John Mark Windle, Eddie Yokley were for the amendment. All Democrats were against it.)

Rep Odum got up and ranted against the amendment system and how it was a dirty trick to bring an amendment less then a half hour before the bill was to be presented on the house floor. Most people realised he was more upset that the Democrats were made to vote on a tough issue. An issue their voters will not like.

Isn't it ironic the next bill up was by Republican Chris Crider. An amendment was put on by Democrat Ulysses Jones. Leader Mumpower got up and asked Chris...

"When did you hear about this amendment?"

Chris replied

"I don't want to get involved in the fight, I just want to pass my bill but I was just told about this amendment about five minutes ago."

Mumpower replied.

"Five minutes ago......."

Rep. Matthew Hill was at one time a "key employee" of the 501(c)(3) Appalachian Educational Communication Corporation d.b.a. WHCB 91.5 FM that is controlled by his radio evanglist father, Kenneth C. Hill --- and according to WHCB newsletters, Hill's WHCB regularly broadcasted a Spanish language program uptil about May 2007... will Rep. Matthew Hill now be seeking that the AECC Board of Directors would fire both himself and his father (the Rev. Dr. Kenneth C. Hill) for airing this Spanish language program from WHCB 91.5 FM???

Rep. Matthew Hill has also listed on his official online state bio that he is a trustee at the Morrison City MIssion (an "independent" church in Sullivan County) that recently had a Spanish language "Hispanic Outreach Program" - does this Hill sewage amendment means that the Jonesborough representative will be seeking to have the Morrison City Mission Board of Trustees to fire his own father --- the GOPeer Rev. Dr. Kenneth C. Hill --- from the Morrison City Mission?

Frist Confirms Interest in Gubernatorial Race -- Former Sen. Frist says he'll have a final decision at the first part of 2009.

TN Congressional Delegation Unites -- The entire Tennessee Congressional delegation today called for action to ensure that Tennessee students and parents have access to loans to help pay for college in the coming year. Every single member of the TN Congressional District joined a letter to Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke asking them to take action to help restore stability in the federal student loan marketplace and ensure continued access to student loans.

Hill Trys Fast One -- House Democrats are upset that State Rep. Matthew Hill attempted to amend a bill about sewage systems with language which would have made it possible for employees to mandate English as the only spoken language at their place of business. State Rep. Brenda Gilmore said she was unaware that Hill would try to add the English requirement to her sewage bill. House Majority Leader Gary Odom criticized Hill for failing to discuss the amendment filed shortly before the floor session with Gilmore before offering it, but House Minority Leader Jason Mumpower said lawmakers need to "make decisions sometimes on the fly, if that's what's necessary."

Herenton Update -- While he's proposing a 17% property tax increase, Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton finally paid over $5,000 in overdue property taxes for his own home.
